The humble silk scarf conjures images of those movie stars of the 50's and 60's, an era of glamour unseen before or since, or perhaps draped loosely about the shoulders at a sophisticated party chuckling over a Harvey Wallbanger. While it is largely unsurprising that sericulture (or the production of silk) dates back centuries, silk has only been widely available over the last 20 to 30 years due to the cost.
The feeling of good quality silk is unrivalled and its popularity has never been stronger, lending itself to unique designs both subtle and bold. The addition of an exquisitely designed scarf to a dress that's lost its glimmer can be astounding, or indeed to an outfit that needs that little something... else.
Taking the theme of our ever-changing seasons, and incorporating imagery from nature spots and aviaries, Carol Lake's work has attracted the eyes of the famous and influential from the world of fashion and television. These designs, originally hand painted, have been translated to an amazing degree on silk. Thanks to modern digital technology, rich images of flowers and wildlife are faithfully reproduced.
The vibrant patterns of the silk scarves of Miss Budd also bring bold images to life, although with a tongue-in-cheek wit. The irresistible designs of "Chic Shoes", "Flutterbyes" or the cheeky "Pin Ups" remind us that as an accessory, there is something of an effortless style about the not-so-humble silk scarf.
